Families Fighting Flu realizes that vaccine may be prioritized for the
highest-risk groups from time to time; however, in a typical year, the best way
to help prevent the flu is to get an annual flu vaccination. A simple shot or
nasal mist may reduce an individual’s chances of getting the flu. Along with a
vaccination, there are several other easy steps to help prevent the flu.
Healthy everyday habits are a main part of staying well during the flu season.
It is important to eat a balanced diet, get proper rest and to always remember
hand-washing. Cleaning countertops or desktops with bleach or another common
cleanser is especially helpful in keeping your home or office flu-free. If you
are infected with the flu, be sure to cover your mouth and nose when coughing
or sneezing. This will help prevent further spread of the illness. Finally, if
someone has the flu or appears to be ill, be sure to keep your distance. Close
contact with others who are infected is a quick way to catch the flu, so avoid
standing within six feet of someone who is ill.
